With the weather becoming more and more beautiful each day after a LONG winter, it is easy to forget about the dangers of the ultraviolet rays (UV rays for short) produced by the sun. Since learning to swim outdoors is a great summer activity, here are 4 tips for staying safe while hanging out by the pool or paddling around in the sun-
-Always wear sunscreen! Be sure to check the SPF (sun protection factor) rating before applying. Dermatologists typically recommend an SPF minimum of 30, which can block up to 97 percent of UV rays.
-Stay hydrated: in the heat of the summer, it is easy to become dehydrated, which can lead to heat cramps, heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Typically all three conditions are a result of the body’s loss of water and salt, and can help be prevented by drinking plenty of fluids when engaging in activities in the sun, even when in the pool.
-Take breaks: taking frequent breaks, especially during peak sun hours (10am-4pm) can also help prevent any heat related illnesses outlined in tip #2. Grabbing a drink, finding some shade, and slowing down for a few minutes can go a long way in the sun.
-Wearing the right clothes: especially when out of the water, it is always a good idea to wear bright/light colored clothes, as darker colors absorb more heat, while lighter colors reflect the light. Additionally, making sure the clothes you wear are well ventilated and non-restrictive (aka not too tight) will help prevent your body from overheating and allow for proper perspiration.
